Anyone notice how bad recordings are today?

Ok buddy, while we are on the same page . . .

Take that Aristocrats’ tune [on your speakers/room] and re-EQ the BASS to where all room resonances are absent and then start bringing up the Bass freq spectrum until everything sounds full and very defined without sounding at-all muddy [even if you don’t like it that way - just try it]. You are seeking individual instrument clarity like the headphones provided. [punchy/defined/even if subdued - that’s where dynamics/musicianship lives].

Then crank it up and listen to it. (Most people just want to be beaten to death by a visceral impact because it is a physical experience for them and not so much an auditory one).

Next; go back and listen to Tiny Dancer again [without changing any settings] and you will understand what the original recording engineers released upon a mastered mix meant for the consumer speakers of that era.

Then leave your EQ alone [forever] and just twist the BASS level dial up on your amp when you are dancing around the room with a libation of your pleasures on a Friday evening as needed.

Speakers are for fun - Studio Monitors are for serious detailed work - Mixing/Mastering Headphones are for critical listening/detailed/focused WORK - and it is work making music/mixes - you either love it and excel at it or just chase your ass.

Let us quit chasing this seemingly elusive dragon and slay it within our own spaces/minds/equipment . . .

Best!

One last thought - you REALLY want to XO to a sub for the above experiment as it will be easier to remove the high IMD from the bass response to your ears/room this way - less cone travel with competing frequencies = less mud introduced via IMD.

Every frequency range delivered to an appropriate drivers’ capabilities with minimal phase shifting.

My in-room Sub PEQs:

Yours will differ for sure but it stands as an example of how to get clean instrument sound - even at low frequencies.

Looks like you have the same room mode I have, around 50 hz.

So, one of my reference tracks is Tom Sawyer from Rush but basically that whole album is a reference to me.

Brought the mini satellite speakers out into the big room along with the mini sub. First version I played sounded horrible and I thought, " man, that tweeter is way too hot". I tried another version and it sounded perfect.

Neither one said what version they uploaded. Remasters really cause problems.

The sub with the Sats are not hooked up yet. Just got the E180HE-44 to compare to the RSS210HO-4.

Also, realized I made the stands too short. You with notice boxes under the speakers, lol!
