I did a quick test of the stain.

I did a single wipe of shellac in the middle of the brace, down the veneer and end grain. Slightly more diluted (with denatured alcohol) than as it comes out of the can. I gave 30min to be sure it is completely dry. Then wiped on some stain, intentionally going outside the shellac portion to see what unsealed would do.

Ugh dang camera..It is a very tame stain, only slightly tinting the uncoated veneer, but brings too much attention to the end grains. The sealed end grain was better, but it didn’t seem to touch the sealed veneer at all. Technically the stain needs more dry time so it might lighten on the end grains. If I do use it I’d probably still have to spot seal the end grains. Not sure It is worth the trouble. I’ll mull it over.

Thinking about wiring. Current plan:

Mount the main terminals, and L-pad pot, to the CD brace. The highpass circuit may end up mounted to it also.

The woofer wires will simply come out a sealed hole in the enclosure and connect to the terminals using the screw-down function. Banana plugs can still be used at the same time. The woofer lowpass circuit will probably stay inside the enclosure.

This keeps things modular, making each section easily removable without cutting or desoldering wires. The CD even has spring clamp terminals.

Now I’m playing around with the terminal and L-pad pot location. Need easy finger access to the terminals to screw/unscrew them.. But I also want to leave enough open space for crossover parts to fit. Hopefully I can get away with a 2-component highpass, but I wouldn’t be surprised if at least one LCR becomes prudent.

I worked on getting things ready for woops. Drilled the wire hole in one box. Packed it with some polyfil from the 20lb box I convinced my wife to get 😅 (she sometimes makes pillows along with all her other crafts). Ran the wire through and sealed it with some tacky putty for the moment. Got it buttoned up and now running the woofer fullrange through my new test-rig power setup to start breaking it in. Always interesting to see how much midrange you can get from big drivers.

JR’s purchase of the Fosi mono amp prompted me to follow suit. I also got the FIIO KA11 DAC I think he suggested, as a starter to get things moving along. Then I picked up all the needed cables and adapters for my PC to connect. This should finally replace the HDMI connection to my main stereo AV receiver I’ve been using for all the previous builds. Though I want to mount everything in an ammo box or some sort of case. That way it can also hold all of the needed cables in it ready to go for measurements. A “woop box” of sorts. That will probably end up a mini-project thread.

Enjoying with 1k uF in series right now. Seems good for my small space.

Listening while staring at my vinyl storage rack that I did a dark brown tinted spray water based poly job on.. Damn they would look good that color.. I didn’t want to put that much work into these…
