> Had no plans for these GRS 8PT-8s after they got swapped out in a build. 2" voice coil and vented pole piece, so plenty of room for a tweeter and wires.

Continuing on with my experimental coaxial driver: GRS 8PT-8 and a ND28F with the mounting flange trimmed off.

I previously trimmed down the gasket foam roughly flush with the steel frame outer lip. But it was not even, nor pretty. If I try a flush recess mount I wanted to see about cleaning that up. I came up with the idea of using some 1/8" kydex that I have leftover to make a trim ring. (replacing the foam)

I started out peeling off the foam gasket. The “glue” is pretty tough. But fortunately it is slightly soft like contact cement instead of hard like an epoxy. So a pocket knife is able to coax alot of it to let go with some elbow grease. Not perfect, but flat enough to glue something else over it.

Marked and drilled recesses for the screw heads.

Then used a circle jig to trim the OD and ID

Needed some trimming with a box cutter to fine tune the size.

So much better than my hack job on the foam. I ended up using some E6000 to glue them on. Currently sitting on the kitchen table face down to hold things in place while it sets up.

A few folks had suggested a high crossover (7.5k-8.5khz) I might try it. That as a sealed top to a vented lower with PA200. Could be 5midable 😁 if I muster the effort to try crossing the woofer around 250hz.

Seems plausible at least. Whether it is truely a good idea? This whole project is questionable anyway.

I agree. Your gasket looks much better than the stock one!
