Dam. He was very helpful when ARTA was first getting popular.
Itâd been about 10 years since I last spoke with him.
I remember him from the heyday of the TT forum. Itâs nice that his family mentioned his activity in DIY speaker building in the obit.
What a bummer. Very nice obit, sounds like a good dude
.
Spoke with his wife Debbie just a little bit ago. She said she is doing okay, and was glad I called. I attended some audio fun a few times at their home in Frankfort, KY, and Ed hosted the CKY-DIY a few years as well. I had met her on a few occasions. He attended my first hosting of InDIYana back in 2009, and some after that as well as Dayton/MWAF.
They were married for 53 years, and were on vacation in Georgia when he suddenly passed without warning. He was in great health until then.
He was a great guy!
Bummer! I met him at my first DIY get together in Frankfort, were I met Ben and others. Super nice guy, so sorry to hear another brother has passed. RIP Ed!
Ed was a super friendly person and his airbrushed speakers were great to see when I was going to my first DIY events just after college.
Thatâs sad to hear. One of the originals.

The guy that did the airbrush painting on the Flames and Storms was âJames Brownâ (say with very heavy Kentucky drawl as Ed would have), who Ed said retired shortly after the Storms were painted. Obviously he was not the âLiving in Americaâ JB, and Ed said he found him by accident because the name is a pretty common one.
And I likely should list some of his projects too, because they were good. Ed was not as creative with badges for his designs as some of us are, and were pretty simply stated, if they had a name. For example:

Boat Speakers, which he built for use on his sonâs boat.https://techtalk.parts-express.com/forum/speaker-project-gallery/43112-lets-see-those-outdoor-speakers?p=600219#post600219
The 2 stated above reflected names from their paint jobs in the first link, and were the only 2 JB painted.
He had one that translated to âbig ugly shoeâ, Zapaton.
He did several center channels, and in fact named one or 2 of them âcenter channelâ.
And last few I can think ofâŚ.
His revamped and improved Zaph ZDT3.5, he called FCT3.5.
He built a larger version of CurtCâs Aviatrix with his own xover, and added an RS270 for good measure. He called it Nemesis.
The last year I can remember him bringing a pair to CKY-DIY, was a set of small 3ways with the Seas U16 as the woofer.
His sub was an active short throw cheap 15â with a pair of 10â PRs. Funky, but it worked.
Youâll notice if searching that Ed didnât build very many 2ways. He felt 3ways were far superior and more worth his time. I can only recall him building 1 pair, which were a âfrostedâ clone of my Sophomores.
