I’ll go out on a limb and say I’ve found his measurements and findings of speakers somewhat interesting. I.e. the Maggies, showing significant overlap of the main panel and tweeter sections, and comps of factory vs. his updated crossover. There is room for improvement in many manufacturer’s speakers - in many cases crossovers and bracing.
When my M65X or whatever they’re called needed warranty replacement, I emailed them about the problem it was having. Danny emailed me back and said “send it in and we will replace it”. Yeah, that’s all fine and dandy except I’m not paying to ship a faulty speaker back to you under warranty. I had to email them back and request a shipping label, and a Scott responded with one. I legitimately think Danny was waiting to see if I was going to pay to ship it so he didn’t have to
And that’s aside from the fact the speakers were clearly hand-packaged, but were shipped with rust all over the motors.
I also find his measurements of commercial speakers interesting.
I find it hard to believe that throwing increasing amounts of money on expensive XO parts can make the same driver, such as his M165 mid-woofer, sound so much better than with more realistically priced, good quality parts. One of his videos is entitled "Do Parts Matter”, where he takes us through various iterations and $$ of parts and ends up with what looks like a plate of sausages with allegedly superior clarity etc which costs much more than the drivers.
Without wishing to add fuel to the endless debate on parts $ and quality, there’s a video on the “Audio Judgement” channel (based in Romania) in which Marus does an A/B comparison of the same speaker with cheap parts and expensive parts: he preferred the sound of the cheap one!
One could argue with his methodology but at least his was a blind comparison.
My final thoughts on this are: ‘tube connectors’!?
I would definitely use those tube connectors if I could hear in the megahertz range.
You mean you cannot?
12KHz maybe. He seems like a nice guy but he could be a bit less confident with his opinions. I was embarrassed for him when he did a video about speaker cables and which were better by using them as an FM antenna
13-14k for me still.
When doing TS Z sweeps, I can make out 14k, but that is about it.
61 y.o. 10k all good, but starts to drop. 12k probably -6db. 16 and up - nada.
About 10k for me, according to Internet listening tests through good headphones, rather than the PC speakers. Certainly, bugger all above 12k.
I’m going to have a hearing test on the 27th. Unfortunately I know my right ear doesn’t hear as loud as my left anymore. I feel like the range is still there, but not the level. We’ll see.
The other important aspect of your hearing is to have a highly developed and tuned BS detector, but there’s no test for that.
My BS detector is tested daily. Often it goes off when I am talking, not sure why.
Those are my initials. It’ll go off when I’m around, I hope, for that reason. ![]()
