Class D Amp

I need a Class D for my computer speakers that I’m building. Is the Lepai LP-2020TI any good?

Has anyone tried the LP40PA? LP40PA - Solen

I haven’t had a chance to try out any solen stuff, but I have one of the Lepai 2.1 amps that are always on clearance from parts express. The sound quality was surprisingly not bad on it, but the build quality is a disaster. I broke one of the spring terminals the second time I set it up, and I’m generally not hard on equipment. It was so cheap that it wasn’t worth returning and it really does sound nice for the price

I’ve had the 2020Ti for a while, and it is a decent desktop amp. Give it the 19V supply, IIRC.

I swapped my rear panel for plastic and modded to banana jacks.

Those 20w Lepai amps used to go on sale for $20 which was just crazy cheap for what you get. But if you need more than 20w, there are so many options now from Fx, Fosi, and Dayton that I’m not sure that the Lepai is the deal that it used to be.

As far as cheap amps go, some of the 3255 sound pretty good and have enough power to drive most anything.

I will give this a try.

Parts Express used to carry it. It had good reviews.

I used a LP2020TI for years with no issue. Currently use two 2020BT again with no complaints. Full disclosure none of them are used for critical listening so I’m not going to speak to sound quality. But they sound good enough to not be objectionable.

I tried a TPA3255 amp from Amazon and that would go into protect frequently when I had no issues with the Lepai so I switched back to it

I use this at my desk:

Works perfectly, nice feature set.

You have probably seen this, but just in case you missed it, Audioxpress magazine did a full review of the Lepai LP40PA in 2019. Read the full review now available here.

Marvin used the LP40 in his Duane Brown’s “Dayton4” builds.

I have been using the LP40 for several years now, in a boombox I built using four of the 3” Hi Vi full range drivers with ND20FB tweeters. No complaints at all. Plays pretty loud for what it is.

I used that LP40 in my first pair build of the DB Dayton 4 Deluxe. It performed well, but the spring terminals were notoriously flimsy. They seemed to grip very poorly, and when I tried to press them to clamp down better on the light gauge wire, the plastic spring clip and spring would fly out! I could repair it as long as I didn’t lose the parts.

A am presently using the updated product that Dayton Audio included in their MK402BTX speakers. I think they also sold the amp separately. This updated amp has banana /5way? terminals that are much better. Ben had the right idea to replace the spring terminals.

I would not disagree with the Audio Express review findings. I enjoy this amp/speaker combo for desk top near field use.

I’ll be using the SB Acoustics Tifa 6 for my computer speakers. I have all the parts. I may go sealed instead of ported. They should team up well with the LP40PA. We’ll see.
