I like the Oxblood, second pic is the denim blue color.
I think in the end, I will go with the clear. None of the stains or dyes really “took” to the birch, just to dense and uniform.
Not much time left, really need to get these finished.
Rear Port,
For the port on the back, drilled a 2” hole from one side as pilot then a 2.5” from the inside for the port tube to sit into. Previous PVC pipe had been a press fit, this must be metric and was sloppy, so I used 5 min epoxy to glue it in. Once the glue had set, used a spiral compression flush trim bit to make the opening to the outside flush with the inside of the pipe. Lastly, rounded over port with 1-1/8” roundover bit. Stubby pipe is just for the 90º elbow to slip onto and then any additional pipe that goes up from the 90º. Will need to finish box and get woofer in box to get final length.
The Big Bevel Taper, or why my baffle is 3” thick,
Had to make a pair of jigs, left and right in order to cut the long bevel taper from top to bottom of the baffle. Crazy glued the pieces in place, then nailed with 23g pinner from back.
I have found when I try to do this cut having an “offcut” things bind, burn and generally don’t go well, so I nibbled away the bevel just under 1/8” per pass. Time consuming with lots of dust, but better than bad things happening with a big cut as has happened in the past.
My table saw is only 10”, so it didn’t make the cut all the way to the end of the taper, and I had to finish it by hand with a hand saw. Very tedious, took much longer than I thought it should.
Finished cleaning up the handsawn bevel with a sanding block.
Hope to put a finish on in the next day or so.
great build thread…
color:
- go back up in the thread. look at the picture with the 3 drivers and the painters tape
- strip might work
- wonder
- what the face would look like a different color than the rest
- or the box dark blue + no stain on end grain transition to the natural clear finish front
Installed the drivers, added sheeps wool dampening, drilled mid chamber for wire and hot melt glued the wire in place to seal the chamber up again, modified a camera lens tool to screw on the banana jack castellated nut down in the rebate it is in and buttoned them up.
Just need to take a couple of measurements and build an XO in the next couple of days, no rush… ![]()
The Focktaves were buttoned up last night and I am quite happy with the result.
Ended up with XO points of ~210Hz and ~4600Hz.
Individual driver responses shown, then with filter and then series notch for woofer and mid.
F3 is 44Hz.
Listening window starts to roll off at 15kHz and is down 3dB by 17kHz.
Minimum impedance is about 4.5 ohms.
(Crown sub amp off)
See you tomorrow!
Thanks for looking,
David.
I’m interested to see these.
