DIY category is a little broad, me thinks

Since the forum is just getting off of the ground, perhaps this is a good time to create more focused categories for DIY audio than just the one called “DIY”. For example you can check out diyaudio where there are separate categories/forums for:

Amplifiers (further broken down by amplifier class)

Loudspeakers (further broken down by type, e.g. fullrange, subwoofer, etc.)

Design and Build (e.g. tips on construction, materials, etc.)

In addition, while not a forum at DIYaudio but should be: DSP and Crossovers (I would really like to see that here!)

Cool to see TAGs in use here. That can be helpful later when searching for posts/threads.

Would love to hear feedback on this idea, and any other categories that might make sense here.

I’m in agreement that we should break down the categories more specifically, let me see what the team can come up with in the coming days.

I kind of prefer having everything in one string. Even if they are segregated, I’ll likely still view by General or Home tab. I feel DIYaudio takes it to the extreme in dividing them up.

I like one thred too - rahter than sub forum that i need to swtich between.

The good thing is this already does that. I can see general, DIY, etc all in one thred. So breaking down DIY into different topics would work - though not sure what happens if we need to nest.

So DIY might be split into 3

Design and Build - for constrouction topics, finshinings, refurbs, etc

Amp - for amps builds

Loudpseakers for end to end builds

But not sure what happens if we need to break lousspeakers into full range, bookshelf, etc.

Would like to see a category for Crossover and measurement discussions

DSP or Active, Room Correction maybe its own category

The old forum’s search feature was pretty bad but we’ll have to wait and see how good it is now. The one category that I found really useful was CLASSIFIEDS - because there weren’t that many listings they would get buried deep in the General posts but I knew I had seen something and could usually find it by looking only in the Classifieds category.

I don’t think that it needs to be very fine grained in terms of categories but a couple might make sense. Over at DIYaudio I sometimes did not know where I would post my projects. Since I build active speaker projects that are nude/OB type, this includes loudspeakers, amplifiers, as well as DSP and crossover development. But you cannot cross post. At one point when they changed software I suggested that the entire forum change to TAG based posts. For example, if you have ever been on StackExchange you know what I mean. So that could be done here as well. Just keep the one DIY category but then have some pre-fab TAGs that identify content. Instead of allowing any user to create a new TAG, these should be moderated and new TAGs can be suggested by any user but only created by MODs so that there are not lots of similar tags that are just a miss-spelling, hyphenated or not, etc. because that can quickly become a mess. Come to think of it, in general that might be a good TAG policy for the forum.

Maybe this would be a happy compromise instead of multiple sub-categories?

I too would like a way of following threads on DSP.

I think we are on the same page, and for now I’m going to implement the single DIY category, and work on a robust tag system that is well maintained by user/moderation under that.
