Just curious if anyone can hear a difference from electrolytic caps vs poly on say a 150uf going to a Midrange in a 3way crossover?
If there is a difference is it a huge one? 150uf capa are EXPENSIVE!.
Just looking for opinions really.

I do wonder, though, whether people’s opinions (or what they buy) has changed since the pre-COVID “good ol’ days”
Im just looking at the price of large polys and can’t justify it. I have never heard the difference so curious to hear what others have to say.
I don’t have an opinion on the NPE vs poly, but…one option…JF Components has capacitors for ridiculously low prices right now. If 3x 47UF in parallel (= 141uF) gets you close enough, 3 of them will cost you about $10.
Ebay is your friend for large cheap poly caps.
JF Comp is a great option.
ApexJr has some good cap buys now and then too, a MKP-LM 50uF 600V poly for $4. Check both their radial and axial capacitor pages.
Other than that, most 150uF poly caps are around $50 or more.
The only reason that I would have an opinion on this is because I just recently tried it on my TV speakers with a 150 uF on the cheap but very nice sounding Dayton PC83’s and it was very obvious to me. I don’t know how to describe it except crap. The mid covers over four octaves so that is the majority of what I can hear from them so that probably made it more obvious.
If 141 isn’t close enough, just add a 10uF in addition.
I need 750 uf or somewhere in that neighbourhood. Just ordered some electrolytic, but will switch to poly if reasonable options are around. This is for a cap assisted enclosure. i’ll start a separate thread for it. But looking for sources of big caps. Does it matter what type of poly?
If you want that big, you either parallel smaller values, back to back polarized can caps, or get an Electronic Concepts UL30 model on ebay for the most cost effective solution.
This was going to be my suggestion. I’m probably going to load up on some caps from him as those prices are insanely cheap
I’m going to grab a bunch of those 47 uF poly’s from Brad too. They come in handy for some woofer shunts and LCR comps as well.
I better hurry and order lol
I ordered the 50uf polys from apex, super nice guy. I intend to do a comparison with both the electrolytic and the 3 polys in parallel to see if I hear a difference. I will report back my findings. ![]()
I’ve bought quite a bit from Steve Slater at ApexJr. over the years, great prices and class act.
I’ll second recommendation for working with Steve. Always answers his phone. Always fair pricing.
I’ve been buying from ApexJr since 5 1/4" floppy drives were a thing.
Wow, that’s a long time
