There have been large and long discussions on both ASR and Diyaudio about these. Purely speculation mostly, but it seems the field-coil coax is tilted back on the flat bezel for directional purposes, inset into the curved baffle the woofer resides behind.
I look forward to the AXPONA coverage to shed more light on this speaker.
Seems the whole baffle concept is about directivity matching . . . if I am understanding this well.
Added: Looks to be about 4 ~ 5 cu ft cab . . . whew!
I’m not sure I’m into the FC thing. He doesn’t go over any specific performance related benefits due to the strength of modern magnets. Just seems like a lot of unnecessary complexity, cost (materials and QC) and wasted power for no real stated performance benefits. Just a “to see if I could”.
I mean, it’s neat engineering. But functionally I’m not seeing any benefits to the end user.
Andrew Jones is a super nice guy. Interesting field coil use. Considered by some to be the best.
Transient response is expected to be excellent while those two FC power supplies pull over 100W combined, at idle . . .
