Looking to replace my iNuke 1000 amp. Is a Crown with a Crown XLS 1002

I have a iNuke 1000 amp with a RCA to XLR level converter that is no longer working. I am not sure if it is the converter box or the interconnect the is the issue. I am looking at replacing the the setup with a Crown XLS to eliminate the extra complexity. I have 2 questions.

1. Is there a better choice?

  1. Is there anyway to get a discount on the Crown amp. Used or refurbished sites I should look at?

Thanks!

The I nuke will accept single ended input, if you’re worred about the adapter you can bypass and go direct with a 1/4 TS.

@KenRhodes I did use a RCA to XLR cable when I first got the amp. (No idea where the cable is now) The output is very low with the Yamaha AVR source.

The low output is to be expected with AVR RCA output.
I woud get/make some cables so you don’t replace the amplifier for no reason. I lnow its not the end all be all of amplifiers but it does to bass duties pretty well.

I’ve had good luck at Musiciansfriend for open box 1002s. They come up about once a month and often there will be a 10% coupon for the site that brings it down below other sites like Sweetwater. Sweetwater has open box ones constantly around the holidays

B&H has a used one for $310.

ProAudioStar has an open box for even less, but I’ve never dealt with them.

Tom,

I looked at a few reviews of pro audio star. They seem to be a legit. So I ordered the amp from them. I have a UPS tracking number already. I will post again after I receive and test the amp.

Thanks for the tip. I was not getting results like that on my Google searches.

Ken. I misplaced my original cables so I wasn’t able to try eliminating the Rolls converter. However I am not able to get any sound, or hiss even with the gain maxed out on the amp. I ordered the Crown amp. This will look better in my living room plus be able to be triggered by the AVR. I will pull the NU1000 and test it out. If the amp is working I will move it to the garage to power my garage speakers. I will find a used mixer to use as a source.

I figured someone would be wondering about this purchase. So I am doing a quick follow-up. The amp was shipped UPS and arrived as scheduled on Friday. I was on a little vacation and just returned home tonight to try it out.

The good news. Amp appears to have never been removed from its bag. The box had been restapled but otherwise it appears to be brand new. Compared to my old iNuke it is nicer looking, more solid. I would say it looks like a higher class product. The amp works as intended. I used both XLR f through the Rolls RCA to XLR box and RCA direct from the AVR. I have no noise with the gain on max. With my old amp I always had a bit of hum with the gain above half.

The bad news. As the iNuke was not making any sound and the Crown is when hooked up exactly the same way - I suspect the iNuke is dead. Also, and a bigger annoyance, I have this mounted in a cabinet I built to fit under the TV. I built it to just fit the iNuke. And the crown is about 5mm wider! So the opening will have to be cut bigger which is a pain.
