New uses for ferrofluid

Wow!

We could all be driving cars with ferrofluid motors

That’s pretty neat.

On a side issue about ferrofluid, I’ve read somewhere that removing it from Vifa BC25 tweeters can improve the sound at the expense of power handling, does that sound sensible or right? As two of my builds use or used it, I’d be very interested in any comments.

Thank you

Geoff

Some people have said that ferrofluid can reduce details a bit. I’v used the BC25SC a few times, never compared side by side.

“Ferrofluid” has always referred to ferromagnetic fluid. Ferroelectric fluid is not the same stuff as ferromagnetic fluid, much different from what’s in your tweeters.

I removed ferrofluid from tweeters before, it did not make them perform better, made them worse. I would be cautious in any statements on comparison that didn’t re-evaluate the filter design, removal of ferrofluid will increase the magnitude of Fs peak in impedance greatly.

Thanks for those comments, I just pulled the faceplate off a damaged one and couldn’t work out how to get at the fluid anyway!

HiFi Compass recommends removing the ferrofluid from the HiVi Q1R, he claims it makes a significant difference in the detail of the tweeter. However one of the Q1R tweeters I received from PE apparently did not have enough/any ferrofluid based on the shape of the impedance curve, and that driver measured horribly. FR and distortion were both markedly worse.

Impedance of that one looks like there’s not much you could do to make it worse. Maybe stick to the Dayton silkie if you want a cheap Dynaudio copy.

Insufficient fluid is definitely a problem, it needs to bridge the gap the whole way around. I imagine it can perhaps accumulate to one side of a motor if it’s encountered some impact during shipping, or perhaps just from sitting unused for a long time.

In either case, I’ve found many tweeters are easily disassembled, many others glued tight requiring significant effort to disassemble. A small vial of ferrofluid ordered from Aliexpress for $10 and a toothpick to drop it in the motor gap can turn some otherwise bad tweeters into quite decent ones.
