I’ve done it both ways. I think this decision is application specific. I mounted a few standard input cups upside down for better cable management, which resulted in the black shifting over to the right hand side.
What about diagonal? Above I classified my Plumber Delight speakers as Red on right, but they could also be re-classified as a black on top configuration. Would diagonal placement be an exception to the rule?
You did what you had to on those, Bill. If it had been possible and those were mine, I would have likely flipped them over.
Of course there are circumstances where function follows form, and it makes more sense to be the other/opposite placement. This would include amplifier layout PCB, xover PCB, etc; but I’ve not found a viable reason yet for anything speaker related that I personally have built. If you look at commercial offerings, many of them, let’s say over 50%, right on red and red over black do tend to be the most common.
