I’d really like to just find a pair of Maggie LRS+ and redo the crossover, bi-amp combo active/passive, but I’m fairly confident I’d a) find myself needing to build that front-room plantstand (hidden sub) that my wife has always never wanted, and b) would agree that at 48 inches they are just too tall / big for our living room.
So next up would be something in line with a trimmed down PureAudioProject TRIO10, and with a little EQ I think I could get them down to within my size constraints. And I found just the woofers up for the job; the faitalPRO 10RS430s except for the price, especially if I ended up really needing that plantstand anyway…
But I do have a quad of the Beyma 12’s from my older open back project, wood and the time, so I’m off to see just how small I can make these and then compare vs my current dual 8in sealed woofer boxes. Knowing that they are still going to be too big, (looking like 36 inches height, still better than my originals at 42 height) it’s a relatively free exercise since I have the stuff, and if they get the low-end extension I’m looking for in our room then maybe give the 10’s a go. If not, probably best to keep my open back sound to the midrange and above, and sealed 8’s below.
Set for testing / comp the OB 12s vs the sealed dual 8s (one rearward facing). Just put in a ‘plug baffle’ for where the coaxial would go at this point. Kept them to 35 inch height, but still looking a bit large? Maybe if / when they have a black grill they’d look smaller.
It was fairly easy to EQ the OB’s to match the sealed 8s (with no visible excursion at volume on the Beyma 12s). These are measurements from listening location (~ 12 feet back).
And thanks for the suggestion. I had it raised to keep from sweeper / cleaning floor issues, but dropping a bit, as well as being able to take maybe an inch out of the top baffle (for the coaxial) will get overall height down to approximately 33.5 inches (more acceptable ).
Was away last week, so just getting back to it. Took the drivers out and was able to bring down overall height towards 34(ish) / 13.5 inch width. A tad exceeding my previous set target max 32 ht and 12 wide. Thinking a small concession to be able to stick with my 12 in Beyma woofers vs spending $ on new 10’s.
Looking at flush mounting the Beyma 5in coaxials (as the grills will be Nick ‘borrowed’ waveguide design) and going to hand route the wings - just take my time and finish off with a small chisel- guide route out the round section, then tapper out from back to the sides 1.125 in baffle- fingers crossed…
I’ve got work to do with a small chisel and sand paper - but overall not too bad for freehand routing. It’s going to be painted, so if I need to do a bit of filler no pb. The baffles are 1 1/8th inch (bonding ½ with ¾ ply - actual sheets are slightly less) which is fine for the woofers - flushed and rear relief routing. But for the 5 inch coaxials way too deep, even when flush mounted from the front. I don’t have a death defying 2 ½ inch router bit, so the back has been staggered with ⅛ in ply bringing the front 1/2 inch to a 1 ⅛ overall baffle depth, and when painted up I’ll be using a little felt (inside top and bottom backside, and in the corners). Pulling from Fostex rear horn box designs, the steps I’m thinking will be fine for the rear of the driver sound promulgation. (Again, these are a bit rough at this venture).
A little more progress this afternoon. Black grill cloth got delivered to post office, so I’ll be glueing my fingers together maybe tomorrow… darn- had to order some speakON 4-pole panel mounts, thought I had a couple somewhere in my disorganized parts bins.
Question: What do you call a speaker that’s a 1.5way for the top-end (coaxial mid running full above crossover with woofers, tweeter passive 2nd order HP) and 1.5way for the low-end / woofers? I’m placing a 2.75 inductor on the low mounted woofer to pull it down an additional 3dB from where the upper woofer will be crossing (~400Hz initial target) to the coaxial. The woofers will be actively crossed with the coaxial > order and final Xover frequency yet to be determined, per measuring.
Hard to see from these pics, but the top section tilts back approximately 4 degrees, and the low woofer out (an additional) 8 degrees at the base.
Waiting on the speakONs before dropping in the drivers / wiring, but I wanted to get the grills done to see the visuals in the room. Got them 'bout as small as I could with dual 12’s; 13 5/8 width and 34 ⅛ high (a bit of felt on the bottom). Next to the current speakers they do show their size up, but thinking when the current speakers are in the basement… less noticeable ?? I’m hoping not to have to come up with some type of grill for the backs.
I will of course be driving the top-end beyma coaxials with the modified Amp Camp Amp you built the circuit boards for !!! The 1.5 woofers will get a bit more watts (650 into 4 ohms) with a Legacy amp.
