Studio Monitors - Experiments in Directivity

Some technical background for those interested in a behind the scenes look:

Having recently increased (narrowing) the directivity of the mid-range dome speaker drivers by employing the wave-guided DM7600’s I found that there was some detail still lacking at the listening/mixing position so I thought; “What if I could narrow the dispersion pattern of the HiVi RT1.3WE Ribbon tweeters”?

So, as an experiment, I split some pipe insulation and painter’s- taped it on the sides of those tweeters to reduce the copious off-axis sound pollution:

Well, it makes as much positive difference in the dynamics/detail/attack of the whole playback experience as it did having just replaced the DM7500’s (Very Wide Dispersion mids) with the much narrower dispersion DM7600 mid-range domes.

Narrower directivity is a good thing!! It removes almost all of the frequency response destruction of having wide dispersion which causes speaker cabinet-edge diffraction and reduces sound bouncing off of the walls. (That stuff causes frequency cancellations [muddiness] at your ears).

Channel separation is so much better as well. So defined.

Just like wearing headphones with clean/tight/punchy room filling bass . . . :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

The power response is excellent and I have had to turn down the SPL as it can make my head /ears hurt with moderate volume levels from 8 feet away with no discernible distortion or noise. (And its only 50WPC into a 6CH amp!). https://www.acoustas.com/

:face_blowing_a_kiss:

Getting better sounding mixes via clean/powerful room-filling-playback makes me play better at times so I will continue the pursuit of this ear satisfaction-thing . . .

Enjoy your day ahead!!

Steev!

Are those SB Acoustics SB20pfc woofers?
