Said he popped a cap by having a resistor zip tied tight against it. I used hot glue to make some stand-offs so the air could circulate under the resistor and the heat wasn’t transferred directly into the cap
Thanks, some resistors do get really hot! Usually I keep things apart, but will keep in mind if space is limited. Standoffs is a good idea if I need to stack.
Don’t think I’d use hot glue to create stand offs for a resistor.
The zip ties aren’t actually applying any real downward pressure. If by chance the glue softened or melted the leads would maintain the spacing. The zip tie would just keep it from wiggling.
I made my own with copper alligator clips from Digikey.
Finally working on getting the Peerless towers ready. Have the Mahogany veneer applied and edges trimmed and sanded. Still a long way to go. Will be a mad dash to get these finished by SDC.
Those are looking solid![]()
Welp, they finally look like speakers again. Hoping I can final sand and get the Rubio MC applied this weekend.
Classic 90s look! Black ash vinyl wrap. Love the look.
Almost forgot to cut the terminal cup hole before finishing them ![]()
Rubio Monocoat, Golden Hour on Mahogany veneer. Reasonably matches the furniture in our living room. Process went MUCH better this time compared to last. Now I wait a week for it to finish curing, then hopefully next weekend I can start buttoning it up.
Wow! Those look great!
Yup, stellar![]()
One down! With the limited amount of free time I have in the evenings, will probably take me 2-3 days this week to finish it up. Then one last measurement to make sure everything is wired right, and then enjoying them for a week and half before SDC
Aaaaaaand done! I think. Still need to measure but sound fine so far, 95% sure I don’t mess up final assembly
Final measurments done.
Left and right comparison of FR. Good matching between the speakers
Distortion measurement 93db @ 1m. 200hz and above I’m under or right at half a percent, above 100hz it’s at or under 1%. Not bad for two $12 midranges and a $16 tweeter.
Impedance. Only dowside is they do briefly drop to 2.7ohm but I don’t think most amps will have a problem with it
