Directional/ focused sound arrays - lots of patents- many complicated, some less so (ie horns). Simplistically based on cancellations techniques- think lobbing on and off axis / line arrays, among others.

Interesting are the LRAD (long range acoustic device) / directional beams used by military.

“Dees Speakers” by Earl J. SP24. Open Unlimited Category. The spreadsheet listed these as “Dees Speakers” but the spelling on the T-shirts looks like “D’s Speakers”. With all the drivers spread out like this in separate boxes, the soundstage at my listening position was very expansive and enveloping, even though I was way off to the side of the room.

@4thtry Vindoras drivers were original 2020 first-generation Purifi PTT6.5W04-01A paper cone woofers, dual Purifi PTT6.5PR-01A passive radiators, and SB Acoustics Satori TW29TXNWG-4 Textreme waveguide tweeters. Crossover was LR4 at 1700hz.

While they were not the judges favorites (Congrats Ben!), I do think they are the best speaker I have built to date and have taken over as mains in the living room.

Dave, I was not the only person who felt those were a bit hot in the treble. Add another 1-2 ohms in series would be my suggestion.

No idea how they sounded, but this steampunk spider alien cabin stove thing is GENIUS!

“FST Tower” speakers by Mattp. (aka “Continuum mid 3-ways”). These were the reference speakers used for level setting between categories during the competition. Drivers: Transducer Labs N26CR2-A tweeter, B&W Continuum LF27170 midrange, and Dayton RSS210HO-8 x2 woofers. Xovers: 500Hz & 3.2kHz. Cabinet volume: 1.8 cu. ft. Down firing port tuned to 28Hz. They sounded great from where I was sitting and impressed me as one of the best sounding speakers at the show. I think Matt should consider entering them in the competition next year! Here is the old PETT build thread on these for those interested in additional info: https://techtalk.parts-express.com/forum/tech-talk-forum/1497580-fun-with-fst-build-thread

Last year, Matt ran them for the judges and they gave him their thoughts. Being he works for PE, he can’t fully compete with the rest of us because he is an employee. That said, they are a very capable speaker.

Yep, I am not able to enter them but I am OK with that. Thank you for the kind words!

One of the best days in my speaker building life. The only thing Andrew Jones wrote on his judging paper was “The winner”. I’ll take that and run with it.

“Wanlu2” speaker by Ben S. @Wolf Over $300 small category. (SP22). Drivers: WaveCor TW030WA22 Graphene Textile dome tweeters and Misco Bold North BWX6501 Neo-XBL2 woofers. Crossover: 1.8kHz LR4. 12 parts with 2 notches on woofer. Sensitivity: 81-82dB.
Crossovers are housed externally in a pair of blue formica “VersaCase’s” that have Lexan tops on them. These cases are designed to carry the xover parts, jacks, and wiring for 2 projects at a time. A very clever integrated system for fast changeovers on site. Just swap out baffles and then plug the drivers into the other pair of speakon connectors. Cool. :+1:

Wanlu2 baffles before mounting:

Pair of “Versacase’s” with xover parts for two projects:

Unmounted baffles for Wolf’s other project, the “Inquisidores” :

That big room would be great for making some long window gated measurements.

These sounded phenominal. Nice job, Ben!

I bet those are sweet.

There were a few very small speakers at SDC this year. One was unfinished until the very last moment.

The Tangeos and EDM’s were both very good!

I don’t remember seeing or hearing these? Is that a home brew coax? I thought this was another coaxless year for Mr Jones:face_with_tongue:

Crazy…I just got that same blue faux-leather for a quick project. I guess great minds think alike!

I missed 7 pair; the coaxes, the grey primer color 3ways, the black HiVi 3ways, Michael H’s stand mounts, Thorbjorn’s towers, David’s B3W, and Meredith’s sticks.

I’d heard David’s before.
