3-Way monitor - aoibhneas

Definitely a sweet spot speaker, but within the sweet spot they image really well.

Curious why sweet-spot ? I’d think the vertical tw / 3 in mid would project a fairly wide image (say vs a 2 way with a 6in mid/woofer).

Also, remind me of your center room heater - ha amp.

Theta Dreadnaught.

Asymetry is the enemy when it comes to imaging. These have radically different polar patterns on each side of the speaker. That matters.

Geeze - just pulled up stats on your amp. Max voltage > thinking you could make your neighborhood street lights flicker… ha

Yeah we often joke about the amp being a flux capacitor lol.

You could TIG weld some light gauge steel with that amp’s output capability!

At Harry Potter hall we damn near did that. Took several seconds for it to blow a 10A fuse.

220 v plug ?

No sir.

I’m not looking forward to carrying these up the stairs come October. Just sayin’

I am envisioning larger and larger wheels in the back of my tower speakers.

If I can convince a friend to help me lump these up the stairs I’ll bring them to Iowa lol.

Still getting used to tweeter distortion below measurable threshold (in my setup).

JR - I too found crossing higher to be best after break-in as crossing lower makes the mids sound a bit raspy:

The Delta’s in the individual drivers’ EQ is to balance the pair in my room/ears.

Listen dudes, having a pair of speakers and listening position tailored to yourself is a guilty pleasure we need to stop putting-off.

Directivity is the key to audio nirvana, IMO.

(And like drugs/alcohol/sex/rock-N-roll - once you find that sweet spot, you chase it to your peril).

Say you aren’t addicted to SOMETHING - I dare you . . .

I’m addicted to a few things, I’ll admit.

Oh wow! Other than the tweeter, I was planning a build exactly like this. But I have to say I’m almost disappointed at the distortion in that Dayton Sig270. I thought a build like this would be on par with or superior to Neumann’s KH310 or ATC’s SMC25A (personally, I think the ATC speakers are overrated, although their dome midrange is impressively low distortion)

Anyway, I thought perhaps that this mid dome crossed around 600Hz with substantial overlap from the sig 270, you could get that high output along with low distortion and not risk blowing up the dome. The other thing I kinda wanted to do differently was DSP in a sealed and much smaller cabinet. But that alone would sacrifice output level and bass extension. (I just wanted the system to be a lot smaller, while still using the 10 inch signature driver … because it looks nice and its sheer size seems to be all it has going for it as far as mitigating distortion goes. )

I dunno, sealed and smaller box with lower overlapping crossover (these will be active with DSP, and rudimentary passive crossovers/breakup suppression and FS compensation) sound like terrible ideas? (the idea is that you can have a 24-48db/oct stopband with a damped knee that approximates a much lower order crossover, allowing the driver handoff to be gentle and still defining a clear and low stopband. )

The odd order is still better than -45 above like 60hz. That is low enough.

Sure and at 100db 1 meter away that’s pretty good.

Just wondering if you could hear the driver starting to crap out or if you think it could go much louder for mid field monitoring duties.

I also mentioned my desire to use a smaller sealed enclosure, which means to get similar bass performance I’d be pushing excursion limits and may only be able to hit peaks of 100db at 1 meter. Which is still stupid loud to me but as a studio monitor, kinda lags behind what an off the shelf neumann can do. Any thoughts on my thoughts above, regarding the more overlapping crossovers with the dome and using this sig270 in , say, ~1ft^3 enclosure with dsp? (The system will likely be supplemented with a sub later)

Sorry. Asking because you’ve essentially already built the combo I was looking for (and arguably did it correctly as opposed to what I’m thinking of.) ^^
