Are you still at the show Dynamo? We just left the car audio area and are heading back to the main area.
I am! Just finishing dessert (hazy IPA) at the Public House on the second floor.
Where are you heading to?
Headed to the EX9xxx area.
Maybe someone can make an Axpona chat channel so you guys could see each other’s responses more in real time? Or maybe just an idea for next year ![]()
Anybody else see the small driver inside the passive radiator in the expo area?
Dinaberg
I just got home. Glad I went (thanks Ani) because it is always fun to hang out with BK, JR, Amanda, and Nick (Ugly Woofer). It’s been ~10 years since my last Axpona.
Just “off the top of my head” observations… There were way more speakers/rooms that I was unimpressed with than the handfull that I was seriously impressed with. Every room that had a subwoofer or multiples had them turned up way too high to draw people into their room. It’s a huge show that could take 3 days to go through to hear 90% of the rooms. I was good for about 5 hours then needed to bail. Almost every room was way over crowded, too loud, and in no way representative of the rooms at my house. Most of the music playing was not great.
As a DIY guy it affirms why I DIY. Yes, there were some great ones that I could never ever design or build, but those all cost more than a new car, or a new house, or both!
Sorry Dynamo! Didn’t see your post in time.
Those Auer wood slat rooms were full sound treatment and smelled like it. Black foam or wool pad behind the wood slats.
They sell that as a modular system you buy as panels. You could tell the room was treated but it didn’t sound sterile.
Note They even put in a wood floor.
I haven’t been for several years now. Always found a couple of interesting ideas to think about for my next project.
I agree, in that many, many rooms were like visiting a bad stereo shop - loud music, maybe ment to present the range of their equipment, but not really enjoyable. Then there were a few with set-ups designed with the smallish room in mind - goal was clean presentation and not bass overload.
Any rooms / equipment / speakers you found surprising interesting?
All good!
Any feedback on Andrew Jones’ new speakers?
I thought the BMR Monitors sounded very good, too.
It was great to see Nick…corralling all DIYers to see/hear his work (but never buy any
). The least we can do is endorse him. Nick only did the xovers, but the finish on the speakers is on par with Nick’s finishing skills. ![]()
I heard them from just inside the door–the room was too crowded to get in, and too late to return later for me. I did enjoy talking to one of his partners in the hall, tho.
I heard the Jones and Cerreta just before 10 on Friday when the partner said we aren’t open but whatever were playing music.
They sounded good, but I realized 1) likely too big for my room, 2) cost more than I’m likely to spend (found out later around 35k), 3) I didn’t ask any questions to interrupt the interview.
Went to the talk. Lot of materials and engineering that drive cost. The dual concentric field coil is something like 35 lbs of copper, and takes two power supplies to drive the magnetic field.
They are trying to make them more affordable.
I was a bit puzzled why the black option on the Pass equipment is $1000 more. I looked it up and it appears they send it out to be powdercoated black. Seems a bit steep for a black front panel and power button. Sounds like a “if you are gonna make me do it, then you are gonna pay” type price ![]()
$6,500 for an “audio art piece”
I’m convinced the way to get rich is to sell audiophile gear. You’d only need to sell a few of each piece a year to live comfortably
Curious , what were the vendors using as sources in their demo rooms ? Ive seen some turn tables but wondered if most were streaming the music
