It was an easy and quick decision for next year’s theme. I perused the old list compiled a few years ago on MAC1 and then consulted 3-4 attendees for clarity, just to make sure this wasn’t too easy, but I feel it is still a challenge.
Rules?
You are allowed 2x 2’ x 4’ x 0.75" thick Home Depot ‘Handipanels’ or equivalent from another vendor.
That is all the material you are allowed to use, and also all the material you must use. No more, no less, minus saw kerf cuts. All board material must be used.
If you veneer, then please use plywood so the thickness is still within tolerance.
Allowances otherwise? Everything is on the table. Open back, IB, etc. No price limit, no driver limits.
I’m sorry, I’m unfamiliar and had to look into “Handipanels” - search and AI isn’t helping much either.
Just wanted to clarify if this limited to a particular material? It seems not since you mentioned an optional swap for veneered ply. Thanks!
I assume any material that is 24x48x.75 will qualify. Handi pannels is a term for precut pannels from Menards. Im sure that we are allowed to cut all the material from 1 sheet as long as the cut dimensions are confined to 2 individual 24x48x.75 pannels.
My “Tuxedo T-shirts” (T-Tuxes) originated as a 2’x4’ handy panel build. I called the idea “Half-sheet heroes”. That build was kindof a bust so I sawed off the baffle and glued on another board for the T-Tuxes. It was a roughly 1.1cf box with a sliver of scrap leftover for a brace.
Wait… “all board material must be used”… as in glue the scraps to the insides?
The veneer thing has me a little puzzled. What about countertop laminate? It is just a simple and quick finishing method for me. Not trying to gain any benefit from it otherwise.
In fact it is probably more of a hinderence as I can only realistically do hard 90deg edges with it.
Do I go more expressive “me” style (rediculous 2-way), or a more personally boring and difficult 3-way that would probably be more appreciated by everyone else?
I’m pretty sure I am going to do a 3-way, but I am going to use a dome mid. If you go the 3-way route, and don’t use a dome or sealed mid, keep in mind you have to build the mid enclosure out of that handi-panel, which may take quite a bit more material than you think even for a small mid-enclosure. (I state this, only because my first idea with a cone mid wouldn’t work because of this.)
The answer to my question is probably no. But I have to ask, just to be sure that I understand what “Everything is on the table” really means. Is the xover for this theme passive only? You have never allowed active xovers in the past, so “passive only” is probably being assumed. Reason I’m asking is because I was actually thinking about mounting all my drivers on two large handi-panels and then pounding the squgglies flat with DSP. A Hypex FA123 mounted to the back of each handi-panel would make this a fairly simple task.
