Could be a “serious” combo, but it doesn’t have to be. Could be a somewhat tongue-in-cheek combo. Might be fun to flesh out potential merits of such designs (in spite of detrements). I figure alot of us have a driver pile to draw from, mix n match and snap a pic. Maybe something could come of it?
A combo I posted once in the chat. Had the DC25Ts for years. Picked up the PC105-4s as open box durring SDC garage sale. And JR talks of those GRS white cones every once in a while. (And they kept being on sale)
JBL vibes. Might get to em if I can clear out some space for projects.
I have had those white cone GRS woofers in my cart multiple times, but I have not pulled the trigger. I think they would be fun to build something around.
I’ll post a few pics when I get home tomorrow, but one of my future pet projects is an 80s throwback monkey coffin using the GRS 10” white woofer, and Dayton DMA 4” and 3” as the mid/tweet. Similar to the Fisher Studio Standard from that era:
Mine will be sealed and use a real crossover, of course.
I also have another budget 8” 2-way planned, this time using the GRS 8 ohm poly woofer and Tymphany BC25TG tweeter.
I expect great results from both designs.
Been getting the itch to mess with horns again. This is an idea I still like. Thought it would be old school cool with the horn exposed up top and woofers set back so a grill board would be flush with the horn. 2-way like Klipsch KG4, but exposed horn like Realistic Mach One. 830869 woofers, CDs would probably be D220Ti.
Though these SEOS WGs open up other options.. They would probably end up much closer to KG4 styling. Unless the drivers go on the narrower side of the box.
Maybe a 2.5 way, keeping the mid-upper range tight to the horn ???
What about an all Peerless budget small 3-way from Digikey? They have good prices, but recently added a tariff fee ![]()
NE19VTS-04 (lots of tweeter options)
TC9FD18-08
HDS woofer
Local availability in Oz is limited to Dayton, Scan Speak, SB Acoustics, Visaton, Vifa/Peerless/Tymphany and Mark Audio. We can import other brands but shipping costs and exchange rates make it a poor value proposition.
SB and Peerless etc arguably represent the best ‘bang for buck’ at almost all price points.
Craig’s Tre Stemmes 3 ways would be a cool build, also perhaps:
Vifa TC-9 or TG-9 with SB20pfc woofer WAW;
a variation of Troels’ budget SB 3 way with SB29RDAC, SB16pfc and SB20pfc; or
For smaller rooms or as monitors, Michael Chua’s “Lark SM” (Vifa BC25TG, SB16pfc) which I’ve done as a test build and sounded really nice. He uses more parts than normal in the tweeter circuit but no too complicated.
Geoff
I demo’d a prototype 3 way in Iowa a couple months ago: Rival R176KB-08 woofers, the PE buyout Aerial Accoustic 4” mids, and one of my favorites, the HiVi RT1.3WE planar tweeters. I thought the project sounded pretty nice and I received multiple compliments. That said I felt like the bass “impact” was just a bit lacking. The Rivals played plenty low (high 30’s F3) and had very low distortion… but the project was crying for bigger woofers with more Sd and xmax.
My driver combo entry post for this thread is that I’m building new bass bins now with the MCM 55-6570 eight inch woofers and designing new crossovers. The MCM’s have 212cm2 Sd and 7.5mm xmax. The Rivals are great drivers but only have 131cm2 and 6mm.
Newark has thos drivers listed as non restocking. Looks like last call on a great driver. ![]()
Ron E used them in a project and they sounded awesome!
Just ordered a pair, fuck it.
Is that a typo? I used the 55-5670 in a bandpass sub (the unfinished sonotube I brought to Ankeny) and another 3-way project that got shipped to California before I had a chance to demo it locally. It is a great woofer for the money
Yes of course. I completely typo’d that… 55-5670 woofers.
Atlas tweeter, SB Aerial mid, and Eclipse woofers. Taiga II, although I may go MTMWW on these as I do have four of the SB mids.
Taiga used 4 ohm Eclipse woofers wired in series, these are 8 ohm and will be wired in parallel. Taiga used the OG Viawave ribbon and a CSS VWR as a midrange.
Great Heil and a pair of MCM/Multicomp Pro 8” CF woofers. Woofers are 92db, but pay for it in limited extension. Will play to 45Hz in a reasonably small enclosure however. Woofers are advertised as only 1.5mm Xmax, but I believe that to be under-rated due to the strength of the motor. Saturation helps. DATS LA, for what it is worth, pegged them at about 4mm. Should be good enough as they would be crossed at 60hz to a pair of subwoofers anyways. The Great Heil can cross very low.
So there are my three pet projects for 2026. I may do a random small speaker, but 26 is shaping up to be the year of the tower/monkey coffin.
This would also be a tower. Morel TSCT1104, Satori Textreme mid, Wavecor 7 inch subs. all 4 ohms, so the subs would need to be powered. A hybrid. What do you smart guys think about me making a passive crossover that also feeds the sub amp. It would have a 10 Ohm dummy resistor on the low pass then a higher resistance voltage divider. I have some class d Ampl. boards and 48V SMPS
Yeah nothing is off the table. The KG4 was a bit of a cult classic it seems. I think it crossed ~1.4khz. I just thought it would be cool to keep 2-way.. Might keep 1-2db sensitivity compared to 2.5way, but might lose out on some refinement?
