I think I’m going to soldier on and complete the finishing. My fear is that I might end up not wanting to take them apart and they will end up going to DIY Iowa still looking like a calico cat.
I don’t think you will be disappointed in the tweeters. Took me a little extra attention to get them balanced properly but was worth it.
I have decided to veneer these instead of painting them. I have some very nice paper backed oak veneer. I want to wrap them each with just one piece of veneer resulting in a single vertical seam on the back. That said I will be applying the veneer with grain going side to side instead of vertically. I don’t recall ever seeing any speaker veneered like that. They will either look cool as kiss or a hot stinking mess. I won’t know until it’s too late lol!
I typically prefer wood grain running vertically over horizontally, but I know that is only my opinion. If this is the oak with the longer fingers in the grain, it may still look okay as you plan if they fan out from the center line.
Vertically also may be easier to apply the veneer across the roundover curves as you won’t face as much resistance from the veneer.
Either way you choose to go, you do have more experience veneering than I do thus far.
A couple of my recent builds were horizontal grain veneer, though not oak and not a total continuous wrap to a single seam.
I’ve done horizontal grain veneer on a couple of builds that had veneered round overs and were one continuous wrap.
Those all look great! Thanks guys.
Ron’s is horizontal, but the grain is parallel with the round over. Craig is talking about the grain will be perpendicular to the round over.
I’ve done that on the desk I made for my wife. That was an 1.625" radius, so your tubes should be no prob. Paper backed walnut…
Now nailing the seam on the back is another thing. Good luck![]()
I still recommend the Wilson Art H2O contact cement if you don’t want to use the stinky stuff. At least two coats on each allowing plenty of dry time in between.
Zarbo does a decent job showing the process in one or two of his subwoofer vids.
I’m not worried about the seam on the back. I will use my router or tablesaw to make a slot that will receive a hard wood inlay.
Fantastic!
I wonder why Tom Z is not on this forum? He was very active on PETT before it took a huge nose dive!
Nice! Which glue did you use?
Titebond II
He still posts on PE. It has been pointed out over there that a lot of the PE crowd is over here, but he is focused on his YouTube channel and prefers to stay on PE.
That is very clever how you did the rounded sides, well done.
I was going to suggest veneer softener, but too late and apparently not needed
Looks awesome!
Look great from the photo. if you don’t mind, can you get a close up on the seam and how you got the edges to line up? Titebond II with the heat iron on method or just wet titebond II and use a roller?
