Doesn’t apply to most of us!

Dynamo’s nostalgia thread made me think of this - I thought this was quite interesting. I’m sure a lot of us can relate.https://youtu.be/CqoEnXLDXp0
Funny I just watched a video this morning from the same channel called “The phycology of a person who knows how to work on cars”
I watched it after you mentioned it..
The visuals are obviously AI. Not sure about the voice (probably AI). But the writing seems human.
“The world gives way to patient attention” Some of the most clairvoyant words I’ve heard in a while.
Then I watched “The Psychology of Millennials Obsessed With Manual Transmission” (almost unwatchable bad AI visuals)
This definitely strikes a chord with an older millenial like me: “The generation that grew up being told that efficiency was the highest value quietly began to question whether efficiency was the right metric for a human life.”
I watched one of those videos a couple months ago about the “psychology” of kids who grew up in the 70’s/80’s (i.e. me, HS class of 86). Everything it said was pretty much 100% spot on for me. I think they called us the “latch key” kids. There was nobody at home when we walked home by ourselves from school. We let ourselves in, fixed a snack, and either did our homework or not. We spent countless hours entertaining ourselves before MTV even existed. There were no computers, no internet or social media BS, so if we screwed up or said something stupid only a handful of people knew about it and probably quickly forgot. No "forever"record of it on fakebook, Ignorantgram, etc shared with everyone forever. We weren’t afraid to be ourselves.
I feel like my kids are so totally ripped off in today’s world! So “non” self reliant! Don’t know something… just google it or ask IA. The most powerful way to learn something is to struggle, search, ask someone with more real life experience. That’s why I love teaching my son to jump in, get his hands dirty, and learn how to fix anything/everything.
Ok off my soap box now.
Edit: for context my son and I are working on fixing our clothes dryer as well as replacing the starter on my Ranger.
I was just telling my kids about what it was like after school…if we weren’t playing outside we were inside watching one of the 3 channels that existed on over-the-air antenna. (FOX wasn’t created until 1986, with its original hit show 21 Jump Street starring Johnny Depp
). We would watch Tom & Jerry, Woody Woodpecker, I Dream of Jeannie, Hogan’s Heroes, Love Boat and Fantasy Island. Pretty sure you know exactly what I’m talking about! ![]()
Yep! We only had 3 channels, just the basic local ABC, NBC, and CBS. When my Dad let me we could turn the antenna rotor to the South-East and pick up WFLD-32 from Chicago. I believe that was an early Fox channel? They played Son of Svengoolie movies (Godzilla type stuff) on Saturday mornings. Good times on fridgid cold winter Saturdays. If he forgot to move the antenna back I could watch thr Benny Hill show on Saturday night (not very often).
We had KET/PBS on UHF, that’s where I was introduced to Bob Ross and The Frugal Gourmet.
Channel 9 PBS my brothers and I would watch Monty Python and sometimes see a naked cartoon lady for a second or two during the intro.
Does anyone else remember the older German painter show that Bob Ross basically ripped off? “Pretty little trees”!
Found it!
Had a fright yesterday when our CX-30 was side-swiped by a truck on a freeway: he didn’t see us, changed lanes when he was next to us and crashed into the side of our car. That spun us around, bounced us off the inside safety barrier so that we were facing into the oncoming traffic and in the next lane. We were very, very lucky that the traffic was heavy and only doing around 80km/h (about 50mph) and the cars following were at a sensible distance. Also lucky that the Mazda is a very safe car. We weren’t injured, just severely shaken up.
I think it’s an ex-Mazda….
Glad you are okay, Geoff!
Sounds like a wild ride.
In an effort to get the wife to warm up to the WJ as a possible spare car she could drive if needed: I installed heater pads in the seats this evening. Went pretty quick. Then looked at the rotary thumb control switches… They have mounting tabs about 1/2" back from the face. Great now I haveto order some ABS plate to fab up custom mounts for these things. And I am a little concerned for the longevity of the cheap control unit it comes with.
I should have just got the high/low switch version: Simpler wiring without a control box (probably more robust) and easy panel mount style switches.
Blizzard conditions here today, so activities will be limited to listening to music and some light day drinking. Will likely not be able to make the commute in the morning, either.
We are having a bathroom built in our basement currently, electrical is mostly done and the crew will be here tomorrow to start rocking it. The last unfinished space in this house. Should increase my saleability considerably.
Pouring rain here right now. Supposed to get 3-6" of snow starting tonight. Yuk.
Only 3 inches of snow forecast here but wind gusts to 60 mph will cause white out conditions and drifting. 4 degrees tomorrow morning with wind chills below -20.
Super windy right now, 20+ mph, midnight supposed to be severe thunderstorms and possibility of a tornado…ugh.
