Old/used gear finds

I thought we had something sort of like this on the old forum. I couldn’t find it. Maybe it was just broken up into seperate threads. If so, I suppose this is a chance to condense it down to one.

I snagged this at a local recycle/reuse center for $10. Sony CDP-391 (single disk CD player)

I’ve been looking for something like this for a while. No whiz-bang multi-disk cartridges or turn tables. Just close the tray and hit play. I like the nice bright display that shows the total track count. The fast forward and rewind is super responsive too. No remote included, but hopefully I’ll be able to find codes for a universal remote to work. [edit] Looks like I can find the factory remote (RM-D190) for $15 or less shipped on ebay.

Nice find!

I love those old Sony players. It has an understated, classic CD player look. Hard to beat at that price!

Have you seen Spare Time Repair on YouTube? He has a lot of CD player repair videos.

This is the old forum thread:

Just picked up a xpa 1002 off ebay $31. I wouldn’t call this vintage gear but a great piece of used gear.

Nice score. I picked up a gently used Denon single disc (circa 1990 or so) about 15 years ago on Craigslist for $20. Still operating flawlessly (in the garage ). Gets some use most every weekend.

I have a TEAC dual cassette deck new in the box . . .

Checking it out now. Good stuff :+1:

I checked basic info on the CDP-391. Produced between 1990-92 !? This thing is pretty much 35years old and working fine?

The Sony players seem to hold up better than some. I just pulled out a CDP-208ESD that was built in Dec of 89. I inherited it (and a few more) from work and other than being a little scratched up, it still plays like a champ.

I have that exact Sony CD player. I bought it new from Best Buy back around 1992 I think. Still works great.

I just bought another XPA off ebay, paid a little more $35. Having a backup will be nice. I can also run them bridged if I need the extra power.

That’s a great deal. I just saw the measurements from Amir. Even DIYers with a big parts bin can’t touch the performance at the prices you’ve found.

I picked up 2 of the XPA1002 plus amps recently to replace a couple of mini amps I gave away with speakers. I tested one and was impressed. Similar to the ASR results. I think I spent just under $60 for the pair.

Well damn, now I had to buy one - 50 bucks shipped, made sure not the 70v output variation.

Had built a tpa3255 4 channel, but not impressed with it. Sounds nice but not enough oomph, think current limited. Will see how this does as wanted something to play with some dsp active stuff plus like compact size. Have an icepower 25/50w that use for garage measurements.

There are also Crestron amps that can be had as well. I like the use of the phoenix connectors, but consider them into the price if they are missing.

These are also pretty good

Speakercraft, I had a bigger variant that turned into elliot P101 despite finding the problem in power relay and not listening, long after I pillaged the heatsinks (bought as parts for repair cheap). But when see 3 pairs of output transistors and stout power supply, know it not gonna suffer in responding to power demands. So know rated at 75wpc, confident it can double down to do 150 into 4.

I still kick myself for giving away my father’s old Technics amp 15 or so years ago. The thing was nearly 50lb with a massive transformer. It only had a scratchy sounding RCA input. Probably a simple solder job to replace. But I was moving at the time and had to offload as much as I could.

All the talk about CD players got me to pull out one of my others last night. Not sure where or when I picked a Sony CDP-102, but it’s fairly heavy and it powered up. Sadly, the drawer won’t open. I’ll have to investigate that tonight. I’m hoping it’s just old sticky grease on the rails.

It took some doing, but I got it running. Old grease on the tray rails had turned to mild sticky glue. I still need to clean the rails for the laser sled, but that’s for another day. Sadly, no digital out on this one. Sticker on the bottom says I paid $10.99 for it at The Salvation Army thrift store.

I wonder if anyone has modified that to have a digital. In theory it should be a possibility.
