Possibility for now

Using a pair of the 55-5670 woofer from Newark and the Wavecor TW030WA05 tweeter from Cinergy. Probably be an additional pair of garage speakers for me if I do this. I kind of want to do this.

2.5 cubes with some added series resistance…

With 125 watts applied it doesn’t breach Xmax until below 30Hz:

At which point it would be playing extremely loud (107 or so db after baffle step loss):

For the majority of music these would be fine for cranking to 11. For the rare content below 40Hz, subs would be needed but you would need monsters to output matching SPL from 20-40Hz. Multiple 12s I imagine would be barely sufficient. Or just enjoy the overhead these speakers would offer.

In any event, if a guy were to buy drivers today he could get into this for about $150 shipped. Not going to find a better value commercial or DIY than this potential badass.

What say you Nick? Want to do this?

Mine were tuned to 35hz in about 83L. Buggers just aren’t strong in the low end. I just ordered another quad (can’t pass up $15/ea). I’ll probably try tuning a bit higher, 40’ish, next go round to add a little more dynamics and punch to the lower midbass. Will give up some low end but these guys just don’t have that anyways.

I have recently found out just how much IMD effects the sound of my speakers after XO’ing the 3 ways off steeply at 80 Hz to sealed sub. [36db/oct FIR]

Night and day - much cleaner and definition in the midbass goes up signifcantly.

Just an FYI . . .

Congrats?

Was in reference to the low-end capabilities of the MCM drivers on sale - if used with a sub they are fantastic woofers if you want clean low-end.

If you are OK with muddy lows/midbass then forget the sub(s).

When these were mentioned last week (pre 15 dollar sale) , I was seriously thinking MTM with the 8’s.Im in.

Steve the three ways you normally post are a single SB20PFC, not a pair of the 55-5670 how would your experiance with a different drivers in a different cabinet coarlate with what JR is doing? JR’s 4x8 is close to 25 more square inchs of SD vs your 2x8 and 10in sub.

Producing 107db @ 40hz would typically indicate good bass responce with a fair amount of headroom for most listening as JR said this is volume “11” for most of us. This a way more bass output than MANY “subwoofers” on the market.

Unless JR goes and does sonething stupid these should be a world class 8in MTM as all drivers involved are well above average in performance.

Ken, I shall excuse myself for chiming in-here with an observation I thought was germane to the subject and not meant as a criticism.

I am using a 12" sub up against the wall FYI which takes the bottom 2 octaves from the work remaining to the 8" woofers which run from 80 to 800 Hz.

My comments were regarding clean/undistorted audio reproduction and not related to SPL.

Hope we are back on the same page . . .

I’m curious why the Cinergy Wavecor over the Madisound?

I’m not trying to say you shouldnt post your observations or recomendations. Just be aware that if you are going to imply that someone will have muddy bass if they don’t follow your instructions you should be able to support your claim. JR’s data is arguably on the conservitive side and is placing these on stands in the room, almost a worst case scenario when talking about low end output. For shits and giggles I would encourage you to model your sysem and see how it compares.

If you are running the Acustas then you will probably find that the limiting factor isnt the SB20 but the “50” watts of power.

Apples to apples 4 MCM is 9db more efficient than 2 sb20 (assuming 4 ohm) this means that the 2 SB20 would need 8x the power to match the output of 4 MCM. 50watts on the MCM would be the same output as 400watts in the SB.

I don’t doubt that your system sounds considerably better with the subwoofer Im just trying to show you some data on why JR’s system will proabbly sound fine without.

Hope this helps.

I assume to get the lower fs of the back cup.

Well, I bought some TW030WA05 so I could play along and threw in a pair of .10 cu. ft. knock down cabs for free shipping.

Really good deal on those ! Almost pulled the trigger on a pair but already had a pair sitting on the shelf, well, for awhile now. Pretty beefy in size.

I am in process of doing some cad work for a stand mount MTM rather than a tower. Maybe I’ll do the tower and Nick can do the stand mount.

Will be a big, heavy cabinet. Take some serious stands.

At 20" deep that’s a doozie. Depending on the situation, some may favor that massive stand mount over a hefty tower though. Sitting atop twin subs perhaps?

Me personally, 20" deep is a bit ridiculous. That’s just fighting the fact it needs to be a tower.

Here is the TW030WA05 with and without SEOS. Green stock and blue with SEOS.

Looks like a throat resonance at 9.4kHz…8.2 uF cap in series

In-home use I agree, but he said these will likely end up as garage speakers.
