I assume they are working with a mind boggling array of samples and assembling them into the tunes they produce.
Step by step. I will get nitpicky. The ghost notes on the snare are too loud on the softer parts. The vocals have way too much treble, probably 8k up? Tom’s don’t really have any tone to them. Just hear attack mostly.

Hearing 5s on the VH track was interesting. Sound is good. Toms sound great. Like the original.

Thanks for taking the time to offer your constructive criticism, Erik - for the sake of continuity/reference, what did you listen to the mix upon to arrive at these observations, please?
(if upon your own speakers or non Sony MDR-7506 headphones then I will be unable to create an apples to apples remix and the comments become subjective)
I’m pretty sure you have those guys dialed-in pretty well, dude.
I am once again in the throws of building a better performing PC for the future work on drumming/mixing - going with a pro built rack-mount PC this time . . . more as things progress.
Also, I have another studio monitor build in the works - back to 10" coaxials w/ 12" woofers and crossed to a 12" powered sub.
I have learned a lot over the past couple of years hanging out here . . . and experimenting.

Yes, dialed in pretty good. Most of the response is +/- 1.5 db. Off axis doesn’t change much at all.

Hot off the press today after a single take and mix at this one - I liked the groove!
Had an inspiring discussion with fellow drummer and got motivated to do something on my kit . . . hope you like.
Get through it to the outro if nothing else you listen too - It’s slow but it takes discipline out the wazoo to accomplish!
Hope the mix satisfies your ears . . .
Let’s see if tonight’s drumming and mixing efforts sound acceptable to you guys and gals - drums are a bit forward in spots but controlled; learned to pinpoint EQ settings to cleanly inject instruments without muddying-up the rest of the mix on this one . . .
(and I didn’t even feel like drumming or doing anything at all tonight - then just doing it without over thinking/self-criticism . . . you can too - just let go and lose yourself in what you want to accomplish).

OK, I had another one in me tonight (getting into an up-physical-cycle, apparently).
This one was tough to mix but I think I have something acceptable - more pin-point EQ applied to the snare, kick and other stuff - just listen - the separation/ambiance of the drums should be evident on good speakers . . .
Much mixing went into this 1st take at this tune and I added my own vocal track to narrate my thoughts as inspired:
Watch the volume as it will creep-up on you . . . . 
Did all this tonight in one pass - things are flowing from a lack of BS consuming my brain.
(If your hearing and speakers can resolve the detail you might figure out it all).
