Hell yeah🤘🏼
I had some time after work to locate and drill the pilot holes for the RCA input jacks, the volume pot, the speaker output 5-way terminals, and the power switch/fuse holder/IEC input jack. Then I marked where I need to plunge down and bore out material with the router:
It turned very cold here yesterday and doesn’t look like it’s going to be nice outside for quite some time. I’ll have to machine the pockets in my garage but I hate all of the buckets of dust that goes everywhere ![]()
So I decided to use my drill press and my shop vac and a 1/2” bit to hog out about 75% of the material. That should help make routering the pockets way less work and way less dust.
Looking forward to how this turns out.
I found a big ugly chunk of aluminum stock in our scap bin at work and machined this volume knob over my lunch today.
Obviously it needs a lot more finishing and polishing work. I initially thought i would either clear anodize it or electroless nickel plate it. Now I’m kind of leaning towards just anodizing it black. It would match the transformers well and leave the focus to the glowing tubes.
Can’t lose wither way. Big hunk of aluminum is win!
That’s a pretty productive lunch hour. Looks great!
I am not bragging at all (I would love to have the wood working skills some of you guys have) but this amp case has turned out darn near perfect! Best one I’ve ever made. It’s ready for sanding and finish now:
This tube amp project has been a really great DIY “shot in the arm” for me. I have three half completed speaker projects going on that don’t interest me too much right now.
I anodized the volume knob black today. Added about 5 tenths.
I might get all the top plate holes center punched and pilot hole drilled before dinner and the big Indiana Miami game tonight! Go Hoosiers!
I got all the holes center punched and the 1/16” pilot holes drilled. After removing the protective plastic film I realized that I’m not going to be able to polish and plate it. I’ll just sand out all the blems and paint it with my favorite high temp engine paint.
Please excuse the messy work bench. I was able to complete the finish on the hickory case and start installing terminals and such:
Looks great!
Looking great!
That’s a fairly clean bench in my book.
That looks awesome!!!
Nice!!![]()
Damn.. I need to try hickory some time!
