What kind of paint do you use?

Joey, paper backed is not hard if you use the right materials/process

for the last 10 years or so, I typically use paper backed veneers and Titebond II iron on process

I think several guys here do the same

PM me or we can start a new thread

The black/white ones are Duratex. The red/green are Rustoleum spray that was then hand rubbed.

some more old builds that turned out pretty good.

Jeff Bagby’s Revolutions

Fumed oak veneer carcass, face glued White Oak solid baffle. Fumed, with some India Ink wiped on to pop the grain. Sapele strip for contrast

Ultimax 15 sub build, with 500W plate amp.

Fumed white Oak again.

Build pics.

On reflection, I should have used matrix bracing.

Shakes the house at 40% volume.

“naked” shot to show relative size. I believe the box was about 2.5 ft^3

F6 of about 17Hz.

Used Jeff Bagby’s WBCD to model the boost.

Room average without / with boost.

Awesome build, but don’t have room for it here in Santa Fe. Gifted it to my niece and her husband.

I love that end grain on the top of the baffle. It tells me that it is real. There is a line there that is confusing me, not important, it might be a scratch.

Beautiful speakers Don! Love the real wood!

thanks!

Yeah, there were a couple of things that might have been a scratch or crack, but I sanded those bevels a whole bunch. Took a lot of sanding for the finish to get a little glossy.

Wow, very nice!

Black Box (Tony Gee inspiration)

I read his writeup and the use of a capacitor assist for a sealed box alignment and then I realized that I had a pair of RS270 woofers in storage for 10 years. Got a pair of Morel MDM55 dome mids from a DIY buddy, and used some Airborne 5002 for tweeters.

I knew that I needed a jig of some sort for the large bevels I wanted on the baffle. After some thought, I realized that the router “path” needed to be level, so the baffle needed to be angled. Built this fixture that worked pretty good. Sadly, I had to trash it when I moved.

The actual sound quality on this design was pretty much the best I have achieved for a monkey coffin 3 way. Very detailed, with great dynamics. Next iteration will use a 12 inch woofer (probably Peerless 12 inch XXLS), dome mid and ribbon tweeter (maybe Heil)

that’s an amazing jig. need to study it in more details. do you have any more pictures? if so please post.

Thanks Ani - sorry, no more pictures of the jig. It’s fairly obvious that it holds the baffle at 45 degrees, since I needed to use the router on a flat surface.

What I don’t have are pics of the 45 degree tilt left and right that let me use the router on a flat surface to cut the nice vertical “shaded” bevels from top to the top of the woofer line on each side.

IIRC, I used a combination of t-tracks and fixed “joinery” with holes every inch vertically. Mostly 2x4s and cheap ply for the jig.
